Contraception empowers women to achieve their full potential

On World Contraception Day, the South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists celebrates the power of informed contraceptive choice. When a woman can make her own reproductive health choices, she gains the freedom to complete her education, build a career, plan a family on her own terms, and pursue the life she envisions for herself.

This year’s global theme, “A choice for all — agency, intention, access,” is a reminder that contraception is not just about preventing pregnancy — it is about opening doors. A wide range of contraceptive methods are available in South Africa, from condoms and the pill to injectables, implants, and intrauterine devices (IUDs). SASOG encourages every woman, wherever she lives, to have an open conversation with a healthcare provider about which method best suits her body, her goals, and her stage of life.

Myths and misinformation remain one of the biggest barriers to women using contraception confidently. This World Contraception Day, SASOG wants to set the record straight:

• Myth: Contraception causes infertility. Fact: Fertility returns quickly after stopping almost all modern methods, including long-acting options like implants and IUDs.

• Myth: You need to take a “break” from hormonal contraception every few years. Fact: There is no medical need to stop and restart — continuous use is safe for as long as it suits you.

• Myth: IUDs are only for women who have already had children. Fact: Modern IUDs are safe and effective for most women, including those who haven’t given birth yet.

• Myth: Contraception is complicated or unaffordable. Fact: Free counselling and a full range of methods are available at public clinics nationwide, and private options are accessible through medical aid and community pharmacies.

Knowledge is what turns contraception into genuine choice. SASOG is proud to stand alongside healthcare providers across South Africa who counsel women every day, helping them make the choice that lets them thrive, on their own terms.
