SASOG mourns the passing of Professor BG Lindeque

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Gerhard Lindeque, a well-known and distinguished figure in the discipline of obstetrics and gynaecology, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on many of us who knew him

Prof Lindeque was a towering presence in the O&G community, serving as the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pretoria for nearly three decades. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the department into a beacon of excellence and innovation, inspiring countless students and colleagues to strive for the highest standards of care and research. His tenure was marked by his unwavering commitment to education, mentorship, and the advancement of medical science. As a visionary leader Prof Lindeque was instrumental in the transformation of the department O&G at UP. Prof Lindeque was not only a gifted surgeon, but also had the unique ability to teach surgical skills and post-operative care to many registrars, colleagues and fellows.

Prof Lindeque touched the lives of many undergraduate medical students, registrars, fellows and colleagues during his time as the Chair of the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the UP. His legacy will continue to be experienced form the meaningful impact he made in this regard.

Beyond his remarkable role at the University of Pretoria, Prof. Lindeque’s influence extended nationally. As President of amongst others SASOG, the College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and the College of Medicine of South Africa, he demonstrated unparalleled dedication to the advancement of women’s health. His advocacy for better healthcare policies, his efforts to improve clinical practices, and his commitment to continuous professional development have left a lasting legacy that will continue to benefit generations to come.

Prof Lindeque’s contributions were not confined to the lecture halls or the operating theatres; he was a compassionate and caring physician, dedicated to the wellbeing of his patients. His empathy and unwavering commitment to providing the best possible care were hallmarks of his practice. He was a trusted doctor to many, providing comfort and support during some of the most critical moments in their lives.

His colleagues and students remember him not only as an exceptional clinician and academic, but also as a mentor and friend. He had a unique ability to inspire those around him, always encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. His legacy lives on through the many healthcare professionals he trained and mentored, who will continue to uphold the standards of excellence he championed.

Prof Lindeque was a man of great intellect, but also of great heart. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

To Professor Lindeque’s family and loved ones, SASOG wants to extend our deepest condolences during this time of profound loss for all of you. We also acknowledge the personal sacrifices and unwavering support you, his family, provided throughout his career. Your love and encouragement were undoubtedly the foundation that enabled him to pursue his passion and make such a significant impact in the medical community.
